A lot of people are looking for external motivation to do something. My advice? Just show up!
“Oh, I need someone to motivate me to go to the gym. I need to get motivated to go do this. I need to be reminded to show up to rehearsal,” or whatever it is that you say that you want to do. If you’re looking for external motivation – something outside of you to push you in that direction – then you don’t want it bad enough.
The reality is, if you want something, if you really, really want something, you make it happen. It becomes a priority. You don’t need anybody to tell you to get up and go to the gym. You go because you want to go. You don’t have to worry about somebody else getting you excited to show up to rehearsal or to take an exam for school. You go and you do that. You show up on your own. You show up before anybody else!
You don’t need anyone to motivate you and get you moving if it’s something you really want to do.
Eric Thomas was once asked a question at a conference he was doing. Somebody asked him ‘How can you help me to not procrastinate?’ He said he didn’t believe in procrastination, that there’s no such thing as procrastination. He said it was simply a lack of priorities. Your priorities either weren’t in order or, what he told her was (paraphrasing) you just don’t want to do it bad enough. If you wanted to do that thing bad enough you would simply do it. You wouldn’t put it off until the last minute. It would be right up there at the top of the priority list. (Here’s a video of Eric Thomas (ET the Hip Hop Preacher) answering the same question on the Steve Harvey Show.)
