Do second chances really happen?
Second chances are something nebulous, taking on different attributes depending on an individual’s perspective. In his book The Shadow of the Wind, author Carlos Ruiz Zafón said, “There are no second chances in life, except to feel remorse.” If this were always the case, there wouldn’t be any need to stay prepared for a second chance to come along in life.
If you make a poor choice that severely damages a relationship, there can be no consideration of repairing the relationship. If it’s over it’s over. One’s career choice, once made, cannot be altered. A decision that leads to a devastating hit to your business can never be undone. If there are no second chances there is no hope for change.
This outlook is shared by many. Fortunately, while it may be true for some, it’s not the truth. The truth is that a so-called “second chance” is nothing more than the opportunity to do something differently than we’d done it before.
“If you are still breathing, you have a second chance.” – Oprah Winfrey
After battling and beating cancer, I began to see my life differently. At the time, I was dealing with depression. Over time, however, I realized that my life was not just an opportunity to do something significant. I realized that my life was a continuing series of opportunities. Oprah Winfrey said it well when she said, “If you are still breathing, you have a second chance.”
Each time I do something, I consider my choice. I consider the outcome. I realize the next moment gives me the opportunity to do something again. If I learned from the mistakes I’d made, I could do something again but better. I got a renewed sense of purpose to my life. Huge dreams became goals instead. By moving toward my goal one step at a time, I realized they can be achieved.
Second chances are the hallmark of living an intentional life, a life in which our deliberate intentions encourage us to take advantage of every moment as an opportunity to grow and reach our true potential. Second chances are all around us, in every moment of every day. All you have to do is decide to use one. Decide to do something different, to make your life different.
